Providing Training to the Community for a Better Future
ASWB Approved Continuing Education Training
Neighborhood Service Organization provides continuing education courses to social workers and substance abuse and prevention professionals. Trainings focus on core functions for all skill levels and topics consistent with current trends in the provision of social work, substance abuse and treatment services. Individuals benefiting from this training include: professionals working in the field of social work, substance abuse treatment and prevention providers, therapists, counselors and practitioners, professionals new to the field, as well as those with years of experience.
Gambling Treatment Training
Michigan Department of Community Health (DCH) funds "Problem Gambling Treatment" via contract with NSO which operates the Michigan Problem Gambling Help-Line. The Problem Gambling Help-Line provides a resource for pathological gamblers and their families. NSO provides gambling treatment training several times throughout the year to educate providers in the trends and techniques of working with pathological gamblers.
Integrated Dual Diagnosis, Treatment (IDDT) Training
NSO is currently in the process of rolling out IDDT Training internally. In the future, NSO will offer this training to the community. This training focuses on the treatment of individuals with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders. Treatment for individuals and families with substance use and mental health issues are complex. This training addresses treatment approaches that allow the individual to be more effectively prioritized to receive welcoming, recovery-oriented, integrated services throughout the system of care.
Direct Care Staff Training
The Direct Care Staff (DCS) training is offered several times throughout the year. This Michigan Department of Community Mental Health Group Certified Training Curriculum is designed for persons working in community settings serving and supporting persons with developmental disabilities and/or mental illnesses. Individuals who successfully complete this training will be certified in the state of Michigan to work with individuals in an Adult Foster Care setting.
Financial Literacy Training
One of many unique programs offered by NSO is a Financial Literacy Program. This program serves individuals who are trying to learn money management skills. The program is designed to provide specific knowledge on the basics of personal finance, debt reduction, credit repair, purchase and maintenance of a home. In addition, individuals also learn how to protect themselves against predatory lenders and identity theft. The program teaches the importance of setting financial goals. Individuals who are currently participating in the program have already started tracking the money they spend and are making better financial decisions allowing them to reach their financial goals.
Homebuyer Education Training
NSO provides homebuyer education training to individuals who are in the process of closing on a loan for the purchase of a house. NSO provides this service to the community and accepts lender referrals as well as walk-in appointments.
Supervisor Training
The purpose of the supervisor training is to supply employees who are current supervisors as well as those who are hired/promoted into a supervisory position with the skills necessary to succeed in a supervisory role. The training will give employees the opportunity to understand the expectations of a supervisor. This training is an interactive model with many activities, experiential exercises and role-plays of common situations in which supervisors find themselves in. The hands-on training approach is expected to develop, coach and grow supervisors into the "Best and Brightest".
Non-Violent Crisis, Intervention Training
This course teaches the basics of safely managing an individual who is physically out of control after all verbal interactions, treatment plan goals and behavior plan techniques have failed. This course focuses on handling individuals who have become harmful to themselves or others. Participants will learn how to use the least intrusive physical intervention to deal with the most violent individuals in a safe effective manner. Participants will learn techniques to avoid being attacked by an individual and will also learn how to defend against chokes, grabs, bites and hair pulls. Participants will learn how to defend against an attack with a gun, knife or a baseball bat.
American Red Cross Courses, CPR (Child and Adult)
This course is taught by an American Red Cross Certified Instructor. Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) is a life-saving course designed for anyone interested in learning how to help a person who is choking, unable to breath or whose heart has stopped beating.
First Aid Training
This course is taught by an American Red Cross Certified Instructor and teaches the basics of First Aid. The training includes how to treat burn victims, how to make a sling for persons with injured arm(s), proper medical treatment for bleeding, glove use, removal and disposal.
