Reaching out to persons with developmental disabilities and their families.
Life Choices provides support and a central access point for children and adults with developmental disabilities and their families. Life Choices staff also advocates on behalf of individuals, secures resources and provides intermittent lifelong support services so individuals may live as independently as possible. Services provided include: comprehensive outpatient services for individuals and their families; ongoing assessment of community programs and resources; evaluation and planning; guardianship assistance; residential placement and monitoring; 24-hour crisis intervention and stabilization; parenting skills training; art therapy; and the PLAY Project.
The P.L.A.Y. Project (Play and Language for Autistic Youngsters) is a program designed to provide training and support for families of young children (18 months to 6 years) with autism. Trained NSO staff teach parents techniques that are effective, fun and useful in day-to-day interactions with their autistic child. Play is a wonderful tool for helping children (and sometimes even adults) to move beyond autism's self-absorption into real, shared interaction. Properly used, play can also allow youngsters to explore their feelings, their environment, and their relationships with parents, siblings and peers.
